Encoding your own videos

When preparing video files, keep your audience in mind. Files intended for use in collaboration and client review should fit the screen size your audience uses and should keep in mind where users are connecting from. Media intended for web-broadcast should be consistent in size and should be optimized for the output display size.

Preparing files for review / collaboration:

  • When you are natively working with 16:9 HD footage, resize your files to 720x405 or 720x480 (depending on your pixel aspect ratio) on export.
  • When you are working with 4:3 SD footage, resize your media to a maximum of 640x480.
  • The player has an option for magnifying video by 2x or to full screen

Preparing files for online broadcast:

  • Be consistent in how you output video used in broadcast. When using 16:9 for a channel, try to only export 16:9 video and do not mix media with different aspect ratios. We will not modify the aspect ratio from its original but it will resize the video to fit within the player. This may lead to slightly pixelated video playback.
  • In order to have full control over your encoded file, export your files directly to FLV (using On2 VP6).

Using FLV's:

  • When uploading FLV files, we recommend using the On2 VP6 codec (do not encode the alpha channel) and bitrate settings of 500-700kb/s.
  • 4:3 footage looks best at 400:300 for web broadcast or 640x480 for online review
  • 16:9 footage looks great at 640x360 for both web broadcast or online review
